Meet Jennifer Wagner

Bejeweled Blitz Makes a Perfect Nightcap

As exciting and interesting as life in Manhattan is, it also comes with its share of stresses. Throw in a freelance writing career and an increasingly popular blog and it’s no wonder that 52-year-old New Yorker Jennifer Wagner needs to unwind at the end of the day. “I’m on the computer all day,” she explains, “and with the blog and everything my mind is always working on something. My brain never shuts off. I have to relax somehow.” Fortunately, Jennifer has found a foolproof way to provide herself the break she needs. Every night as she settles into bed she picks up her iPhone and plays Bejeweled Blitz for an hour or so. Jennifer’s been playing the game religiously for over a year and still remains happily addicted. “When I play, I can’t think about other things. It gets everything out of my head and I can rest,” she says contentedly.

And what exactly is jostling for space in Jennifer’s brain? Pop culture, mostly. Jennifer is an avid consumer of quality movies, books, music, and television. “I’m a big fan of shows like Parenthood, Fringe, Glee, 30 Rock, and Lost,” she says, then adds, “My Netflix queue is pretty big and I’ve always been a big reader. And thanks to my sons and iTunes I’m able to stay up on the latest indie music.” That musical connection with her 20- and 23-year-old boys is no small matter to Jennifer; in fact, it is just that sort of connection that inspired her to start writing her blog, Connect with Your Teens Through Pop Culture and Technology, two years ago.

“My husband and I had just moved into the city from Long Island and I wanted some time to settle in and get organized in the city. But I wanted something to do, too,” Jennifer explains. “I remembered how when my boys were at home I’d ask how they’re doing or about their day and they’d say ‘Fine’ and that was it. But if I was interested in the same TV shows or music or whatever we could talk for hours. It was a great way of staying close, of connecting. So that inspired me to start the blog.” Through her blog, Jennifer provides detailed updates on the latest trends in technology, television, videogaming and more, all with the intention of helping befuddled parents navigate the crowded pop culture scene in order to find some common ground with their teens. It’s Jennifer’s hope that once that common ground is discovered, parents and teens can launch the sort of conversations that deepened her bond with her sons.

Oddly enough, for a woman so concerned with people connecting, Jennifer doesn’t take advantage of Bejeweled Blitz’s social features. “I don’t have a leader board,” she says. “I play to compete against myself, not others.” She also plays exclusively on her iPhone and not on her PC or Facebook. “I prefer playing on my iPhone because I can play anywhere. Plus, it’s a break from the computer that I already spend too much time on,” she says with a laugh. With the pop cultural landscape constantly expanding, Jennifer’s blog is going to need even more frequent updates; happily, Bejeweled Blitz will be there every night, ready to scrub her brain clean and ease her into sleep.
